December 13, 2007 - 0 Comment(s)

This is posted on our company blog also, but I wanted to mention it again here. We’re really excited to be one of only 40 companies selected to present at the Southeast Venture Conference. There are some great companies presenting as well as some incredible keynote speakers, such as John Sculley (Apple and Pepsi), Jim Steele (Salesforce.com), Frank Bonsal (NEA), and many others.

Half the world has a phone

Today, Informa Telecoms and Media has estimated that “worldwide mobile penetration will hit 50 per cent - or around 3.3 billion subscriptions”. This is one of those stats that makes you say, “wow”, even though we all know they can’t confirm this statistic. Regardless, it demonstrates the amazing growth and penetration of the mobile phone across the globe

Mobile pone penetration is an amazing thing. You have to take a step back to realize the effect - it strikes me as similar to axons and dendrites (think back to your Biology 101 days) connecting to each other to form the human brain. By itself, a mobile phone isn’t so amazing…but connected to others, it forms an expansive human network like never before. Seems like the world is becoming one giant brain. I just hope we start using more of our collective intelligence over time.

The next time you look at your mobile phone, think about how, in the palm of your hand, you have the power to instantly connect with others all across the world. It’s actually pretty darn amazing.
